The time I tried to see Aurora Borealis in Worcester

It wasn't what I expected

Tiny backstory for any that don't know

I live in Central Massachusetts and we don't get to see aurora borealis very often here so the large sun tantrum that sent us a light show was very unusual for us. It caused a bunch of excitement.

My first effort to have a look

I tried to see it from my driveway. I could see some faint pink color but nothing exciting.

After walking around my neighborhood a bit it was obvious that light polution was going to be a problem so I decided to head up to Airport Hill. It's literally where our small airport is. It's dark up there and wide open fields so nothing to obstruct my view.

Party at Airport Hill

EVERYONE within driving distance had the same idea so there were a lot of people up there. The road was full of parked cars on both sides, lots of traffic, and people trying to find a good spot to look. So much for avoiding light polution.

I met a few nice people and we had fun trying to take photos of the sky. Unfortunately, we did not see anything very vivid. The sky was vaguely green when we looked at it. We had to use our camera phones to really see anything.

I got some... interesting photos

Everyone else in New England posted their very pretty photos of all the fantastical colors they saw. I never saw any of that. I got weird green. Also, my photos are not very good because all I had was my phone.

See for yourself. It looks like I was trapped in an X Files episode.

Bushes lit up brigh red with tail-lights and a sickly green sky.

Bushes lit up bright red with tail-lights and a strange pink/green sky.

Big fence with a sign that reads 'restricted area' with a pink and green sky.

I want to believe.
